Far more than just a snowshoe hike, Hugo from Pied Vert gave us a tour of the Vercors winter wildlife, from mountain hare to wolf, through tracks and leftovers from meals. A real detective investigation, off-piste in a stunning landscape and with a smile. Thanks to Pied Vert for sharing their love of nature as well as the challenges of co-existence between human activity and wildlife.

Great snowshoe hike around Autrans. Yoann, our guide for the whole trip, shared his knowledge and taught us about our beautiful nature. They also give advice on routes and refuges (Feneys refuge recommended) for getting a bite to eat, which is perfect when you don't know the area.

Three fantastic days snowshoeing high up in this stunning Vercors regional park. Despite the changeable weather at the start of the season, I'm finishing this third day on a high. Thanks to the Pied Vert team: Yoann, Ugo, Yann! Thanks for your sharp guiding, your good advice, your top-level expertise, your passion for the mountains, your love for this beautiful region; you talk about it with such passion! A team of gold-standard experts who really make the most of this wonderful mountain heritage. I recommend this team with my eyes closed and will definitely come back, walking the combes, climbing the passes and peaks, on the trail of the wolf. Thank you!

Snowshoe walk with friends with Ugo on 31/12 in the morning, through the snowy forest at the Col de la Croix Perrin. Ugo's explanations about all the animal tracks of this beautiful forest delighted us: pine marten, roe deer, even the tracks of a wolf pack. The story of the woodpecker and its holes. We ended 2024 in style in the middle of Mother Nature. Thanks Ugo!

A lovely night-time snowshoe hike with friends, with Yann who is top, very kind, with good explanations and a route well suited to our group! The night-time atmosphere with the quiet of the woods and discovering the cave was magical! And the hot drink with the little activity was really nice! Thanks to Pied Vert and Yann!

Great family outing, on the trail of animals, on snowshoes. Ugo is very friendly and taught us lots of things in a really educational way. The outing was tailor-made to please everyone (from age 6 to... well beyond). The kids loved it, and so did we.

Brilliant... once again!!! Outing as a group of 8, with Ugo and Marion, very friendly and warm guides! Mission: hunt for the yeti, kitted out with snowshoes and a good sense of humour! Thanks to both of you for this really memorable pre-Christmas outing! Have a great holiday season and see you next year for a new adventure that we're already looking forward to!

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to rent my snowshoes?

No. Snowshoes are lent by your Pied Vert leader, included in the price. You only need sturdy hiking boots and warm clothing.

Is snowshoeing suitable for children?

Yes, from around 5 or 6 years old. We adapt the duration and the route. Family outings mix walking with nature discoveries (animal tracking, games in the snow).

What if there isn't enough snow?

Our leaders watch conditions closely. If snow is thin at low altitude, we go higher, or we offer an alternative (regular hike, wildlife outing). The Vercors always has something to offer.

When is the best time for snowshoeing in the Vercors?

From January to March, the snowpack is usually well established from 1000 m up. December and April are possible depending on the year. The season is longer at altitude, especially on the Vercors Highlands.

Snowshoeing in the Vercors

Snow cover and forecast in the Vercors

The first snowfalls arrive at altitude as early as the end of summer. They vanish quickly under the last heat in the hours that follow.

Autumn and November bring snow more steadily. As the cold air settles in, ski stations fire up the cannons to open alpine and nordic ski runs from December. To put on snowshoes, you sometimes have to head higher.

From January onwards, the snowpack settles more durably and lets hiking enthusiasts strap on snowshoes around 1000 m. If the weather plays along, this pleasure lasts until April.

But the climate is changing.

Our mountain leaders' hiking poles aren't quite magic wands yet. We can't promise you a powder day. What we can promise: conviviality and nature discoveries on every outing.
