Hiking in the Vercors without a car :
Public transport and shared travel

Hiking in the Vercors by public transport from Grenoble

The Pied Vert mountain leaders run Vercors hikes from your accommodation (hotels, guesthouses, campsites…) for people on holiday or locals.

Our on-demand outings, nature activities and bivouacs are also open to people from the Grenoble basin, Lyon or Valence who'd come up to the plateau for the day.

To make the most of them, we invite our guests to come to the plateau without their car.

Here's a short summary of the different ways to reach the Vercors plateau without driving, and to favour shared travel and public transport.

By Bus

From Grenoble to the Vercors

From Grenoble to Villard-de-Lans

Lines 5100 and 5110 from Transisère link Engins, Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte, Lans-en-Vercors and Villard-de-Lans through about ten daily connections.

Timetables are on the Transisère website. A Grenoble-Lans trip costs around 5 euros.

From Grenoble to Corrençon-en-Vercors

Line 5130, to book the day before, takes you to Corrençon-en-Vercors from Villard-de-Lans or Grenoble with a coach change.

From Grenoble to Autrans and Méaudre

Transisère line 5120 runs around the Four Mountains: the bus leaves Lans-en-Vercors, passes through Autrans, then Méaudre before reaching Villard-de-Lans. This line runs about 5 times a day on average.

Good to know: these buses are subsidised by the département.

Winter: Transaltitude & Skiligne

In winter, the Vercors gets a boosted bus service to the ski resorts. It's also an ideal way to come from Valence, Grenoble or Lyon for snowshoeing on the plateau.

The TRANSALTITUDE 5100 line can drop you in Lans-en-Vercors, Villard-de-Lans or Côte 2000. Approximate price 15€/person. More info on transaltitude.fr.

By Bike

Dozens ride up from Grenoble every weekend for the 800m or so of elevation through the picturesque Gorges du Furon.

Why not you?

Will you still have the energy to hike or to navigate in the mountains?

Car-sharing

The companies MountainGo and Blablacar connect people heading to the Vercors so they can share rides.

Either way, the leaders of the collective adapt to your travel constraints and plan the start of the booked outing from your arrival point (bus station, bike rack, car-share area, etc.).

And the little Pied Vert extra to close the loop: most of the time, we also reach the start of our hike using gentle transport (a bike?).

Our practice is in line with the campaign by Mountain Wilderness: Changer d'Approche. We want to support (and celebrate) green travel with those who choose to come and enjoy the mountains while protecting them from the pollution caused by our trips, especially in private cars.

Hitch-hiking

Less common, yet so quick on the plateau.

From the Sassenage roundabout, where a shelter waits, you just have to put out a thumb or wave at drivers.

The Vercors park supports this practice by working on safe spots at the edge of villages for hitch-hiking.

New in 2020, LED panels at the village exits indicate your direction to drivers.
