During the red deer rut, the Pied Vert mountain leaders offer an outing into the wild to listen for the bellowing and perhaps watch the animals.

Calling matches, drawn-out roars, antlers clashing... these behaviours of the largest mammal in the Vercors forests built its reputation.

In early autumn, it is a magic moment for anyone who appreciates the spectacles of nature.

Details:

When does the red deer bellow?

At our latitudes (France), the red deer rut resonates between mid-September and mid-October. The rut window can shift by one or two weeks depending on the weather. A hot summer usually announces an early rut.

You can call us last-minute to set up a guided outing or book in advance for the first two weeks of October.

What time should you go to see the rut?

All day and all night. To watch in the best conditions, we offer:

Where to watch the rut?

Stags and hind herds gather mainly in open areas in the middle of the forest, like clearings. Some sites are very popular in the Vercors, such as the Ambel plateau, and for good reason: they are also protected during the hunting season.

Our guided outings stay off the beaten track. Sometimes we have the bad luck to arrive at a site that has also been the site of a hunt.

The physical difficulty of the outing is adjusted to your wishes and to the group's level.

We run guided outings near Vercors villages: Villard-de-Lans, Corrençon-en-Vercors, Autrans...

How do you watch the rut? Our educational approach

On every rut outing we lead, we introduce the group to the biology of the species. It is a chance to ask: how do antlers grow? Do hinds bellow? Where do red deer live? What is the difference between a hind and a roe deer?

The idea is to discover or deepen, in a playful way, the main characteristics of the species, going through the life cycle (including the rut), feeding, predators (like wolves?), evolution...

This awareness is adjusted to the group's knowledge and to the timing of the outing. A rut weekend gives time to dig into certain points in connection with the field, while an end-of-day outing covers the basics.

This grounding then allows an approach and a hide in the best conditions: each participant gets the specifics of this remarkable period for the species. The leader's instructions, given to avoid disturbing or interfering with the deer, are then followed naturally.

Booking

Directly with a Pied Vert mountain leader who will perhaps run your outing or weekend, you can book or ask for more information by phone on 07 66 64 90 96 or by email (contactpiedvert.com ).

We work with sliding rates (favouring groups and families), from 34€/person for a group of 6 on an end-of-afternoon outing. For weekends, we put together a bespoke quote based on your wishes, with fair prices and no middleman.

Weekend demand in September and October for the rut is very high. Prefer a weekday outing (end of day) or plan ahead.

Small groups make for better watching.

And as with every wildlife outing, an encounter with the wild world is favoured by the mountain leader's knowledge of the area... but it is not guaranteed. The regional nature park of the Vercors is not a wildlife park.

You can also gift a weekend or a rut outing to someone with a nature gift box.
